ULAN BATOR, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Half of the adult population in Mongolia and one third of school age children are overweight, showed a national nutrition survey released on Thursday.

Food safety is not ensured in one out of five households in Mongolia, and the daily number and type of food products consumed by the population are few, revealed the survey conducted by the National Center for Public Health in 2016-2017.

The report also showed 26.6 percent of children under age five, 16.1 percent of mothers and 21.4 percent of pregnant women have anemia.

Vitamin D deficiency is highly common among children and adults, it added.

The national survey covered 94 soums and 30 khoroos (administrative subdivisions) selected randomly from 21 provinces and eight districts of the capital city, Ulan Bator.

The report recommended changing the unhealthy habits including eating too much salt, oil and sugar, and doing too little exercise, in order to reduce the spread of obesity.
