AYBAK, Afghanistan, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rains and flooding have claimed seven lives and destroyed residential houses in Afghanistan's northern Samangan and Baghlan provinces.

According to Samangan police spokesman Mohammed Munir Rahimi, the torrential rain and flood claimed the lives of seven people including two women and four children outside Samangan provincial capital Aybak on Monday.

More than 100 acres farmlands have been washed away while 70 houses were badly damaged or destroyed.

Similarly, the downpour and floods have destroyed several houses in the neighboring Baghlan province a couple of days ago.

According to a statement of Natural Disaster Management Authority released here on Tuesday, heavy rains and flooding have killed 34 people and injured four others elsewhere in the country mostly in the northern provinces over the past one week.
