NEW DELHI, June 13 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people died and around 20 injured, some of them seriously, when the bus they were travelling in collided with a road divider in north India early Wednesday morning, confirmed a senior government official.

The bus accident occurred in northern state Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district.

Mainpuri District Magistrate Pradeep Kumar told Xinhua over phone that the accident occurred at around 5.00 a.m. (local time) when the bus rammed into a road divider.

The ill-fated bus was on its way from Jaipur (capital of western state of Rajasthan) to Kannauj district in Uttar Pradesh.

There were around 90 passengers inside the bus when the mishap occurred.

The injured were admitted in a government hospital in Mainpuri, and the death toll is feared to rise as some of the injured passengers are in critical condition, said the government official.

"We are taking utmost care of the injured passengers at the government hospital here. Those who received minor injuries have been discharged after giving them the required medical treatment," added the senior district official.
