NEW DELHI, June 23 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and more than 24 others injured in a road accident in the western Indian state of Gujarat, police said Saturday.

"The accident occurred when a truck carrying some 32 people veered off a small bridge near the Bhavnagar-Somnath highway in the state's Amreli district on Friday night," a police official said.

While seven people died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a nearby government hospital, where the condition of five people were said to be serious, he said.

Police said initial investigations indicated that the truck was travelling at high speed and as a result the driver lost control of the vehicle on the bridge, leading to the accident.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident," the official added.

India has one of the highest numbers of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
