Egypt appoints presidential aide as intelligence chief

CAIRO, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Egypt officially appointed Thursday presidential aide Abbas Kamel as the new intelligence chief after he has been temporarily running the General Intelligence Service for half a year, official MENA news agency reported.

Kamel, the president's office manager, has been sworn in as intelligence chief Thursday before Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

The Egyptian president sacked former intelligence chief Khaled Fawzy in mid-January without announced reasons.

Earlier in mid-June, a massive cabinet reshuffle in Egypt saw the change of the defense and interior ministers of the country engaged in "a war against terrorism."

Sisi came to office in mid-2014, a year after he, as the army chief then, led the military ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in response to mass protests against Morsi's one-year rule and his now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group.

Sisi was re-elected in April with a landslide victory for a second four-year presidential term.

Kamel has been Sisi's chief-of-staff since 2010 when the latter led the military intelligence, the defense ministry and then the presidency.
