JAKARTA, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Eight people were killed and 11 others were injured in a traffic accident in Indonesia's West Java province on Tuesday night, a senior official confirmed on Wednesday morning.

According to Desiana Kartika Bahari, head of the Jakarta search and rescue office, the accident occurred near the Ciawi Toll Gate in Bogor Regency just before midnight. She said the accident involved a truck that experienced brake failure, resulting in a collision with two cars at the tollgate and causing severe damage.

"The crash resulted in 19 victims - eight fatalities and 11 others with serious or minor injuries. All victims were rushed to Ciawi General Hospital," she told Xinhua by phone.

Desiana noted that her team's primary tasks were to assist the victims, ensure their evacuation, and provide immediate support. "Our focus was to help the victims and confirm that all were safely evacuated," she added.

Bogor Regency Police Chief Eko Prasetyo said the accident occurred at 11:30 p.m. Jakarta time on Tuesday, damaging six vehicles. He confirmed that brake failure was the cause of the crash. ■
