NEW YORK, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- U.S. dollar rose in late trading on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he ultimately wants a strong dollar.

Trump told CNBC in an exclusive interview that the dollar is going to get stronger and stronger as the country is becoming so strong in economy and many other fields. He added the U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's comments on the dollar were misinterpreted.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, increased to 89.379 in late trading after dipping to as low as 88.438 earlier.

On Wednesday, Mnuchin said at the World Economic Forum that the declining dollar is good for U.S. exporters, suggesting he is not worried about the currency's recent drop.

In late New York trading, the euro decreased to 1.2394 dollars from 1.2404 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound dropped to 1.4124 dollars from 1.4214 dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar edged down to 0.8021 dollar from 0.8079 dollar.

The dollar bought 109.42 Japanese yen, higher than 109.05 yen of the previous session. The dollar decreased to 0.9425 Swiss franc from 0.9453 Swiss franc, and it was up to 1.2364 Canadian dollars from 1.2321 Canadian dollars. Enditem
