NEW DELHI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- A flood alert has been sounded in Delhi, as the Yamuna river, that flows through the Indian capital city, has been above the danger mark for the past couple of days.

Yamuna river is flowing above the danger mark, especially after the neighboring state of Haryana released large amount of water from the "Hathnikund Barrage", around 150 miles north of Delhi, on Saturday. Heavy rains in Delhi and surrounding areas during the last week further aggravated the crisis.

In India, the July-August period is the monsoon season.

As the river's water-level rose to 205.53 meters, almost touching an iron bridge for trains movement, as many as 27 trains have been cancelled and a few diverted to other routes, an Indian railway official said.

The process to evacuate people living in the low areas has been initiated. Till now, more than 3,000 people have been evacuated and shifted to makeshift camps. Temporary tents have been installed at the camps for the evacuees and provisions of food, water and other necessary items have been made.

Delhi witnessed the worst ever floods in 1978 when the Yamuna river's water level touched a record 207.49 meters.
