UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday condemned "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attacks that took place in Afghanistan over the past week.

Describing the attacks as "heinous and cowardly," the members of the Security Council condemned the attacks targeting a medical center for midwives and a government building in Jalalabad, capital of eastern Nangarhar province, as well as the Khawaja Hassan mosque in Gardez, capital of eastern Paktia province, leaving at least 48 people killed and numerous wounded.

"The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Afghanistan and they wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured," according to a Security Council statement.

The Security Council underlined the need in the statement to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice, and urged all states to combat threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.

"The members of the Security Council reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed," the statement said.
