NEW DELHI, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday said the flood situation remained grim in several districts of the state.

The water level in Ghaghra River has breached the banks and inundated human habitations.

"Ghaghra River is wreaking havoc in Faizabad, Gonda, Barabanki, Mau and Sitapur districts and breached embankment at three places, submerging more than 500 villages in Tarabganj and Carnailganj areas in Gonda district alone," an official said.

Officials said Mandakini River in Chitrakut was also flowing above danger mark, creating panic in Ramghat area.

On Friday Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected districts of Lakhimpur Kheeri and Gonda.

A government spokesman said Adityanath distributed the relief material to the affected people in Barabanki and directed officials to repair the embankments breached by Ghaghra River.

Reports said incessant rains in many parts of the state have led to water-logging in several areas during the past 24 hours.

The Meteorological department has predicted heavy rain in several parts of the state in the next 24 hours.

Officials said local government has cancelled the leave of officials in flood-affected areas and asked the administration to intensify rescue operations.
