NEW DELHI, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people have been killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in the western Indian state of Gujarat, police said Monday.

The accident occurred on a national highway near Baleshwar village in the state's Surat district.

"The SUV carrying the victims collided with the truck coming from the opposite direction after crossing onto the other side of the highway when its driver lost control of the vehicle Sunday night," a police official said.

While six people died on the spot, four others succumbed to their injuries in a hospital, he added. "The bodies have been sent for an autopsy," the official said.
