CAIRO, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Egypt said on Thursday that it will continue efforts to cool off conditions in the Gaza Strip after two days of fierce fighting between Gaza militants and the Israeli army.

Addressing a meeting of the Arab League council on the Israeli attacks on Gaza, Egypt's delegate to the Arab League Yasser al-Atwi said his country is following up with the aftermath in the enclave, warning of the seriousness of the volatile situation.

Al-Atwi called on Israel to immediately cease all air raids as well as the use of excessive military force.

He called for avoiding any acts that jeopardize the already worsening humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories.

The Egyptian official also urged the international community to shoulder their responsibilities toward the Palestinians and activate resolutions to restore Palestinians' rights.

Al-Atwi reiterated Egypt's commitment to all legitimate rights of Palestinians.

On Tuesday, Egypt brokered a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas-led militant groups in the Gaza Strip, which ended two days of confrontations that killed at least eight and wounded more than 20 civilians.

Tension between Gaza and Israel mounted on Monday evening, when Gaza militant groups fired a barrage of rockets from the coastal enclave into southern Israel.

The rockets came in retaliation for the killing of seven Hamas militants on Sunday night east of the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis, where one Israeli army officer was also killed in the exchange of fire.

In response, Israeli war jets carried out intensive airstrikes across the blockaded Palestinian enclave, destroying buildings, homes of Hamas leaders and a television station owned by Hamas.
