      YANGON, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar health authorities is projecting to continue to launch anti-elephantiasis campaign in the country this year as a follow-up of last year, Myanmar News Agency reported Friday.

      Myanmar is among the seven nations out of 10 of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) being affected by elephantiasis and the patients are to take the vaccine and medication once a year for five consecutive years.

      Elephantiasis, known as Lymphatic Filariasis, is a parasitic infection caused by mosquito bites which can infects kidneys and lymph system.

      The Health Department had provided treatment to 32 million people from 192 townships during a 10-day vaccination programs across the country in January 2018.

      Myanmar's central regions including Magway, Mandalay, Sagaing and Nay Pyi Taw mostly suffer the elephantiasis disease.

      Myanmar health authorities has been exerting efforts to eradicate elephantiasis in the country by 2020.
