BERLIN, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Daniel Caligirui's brace helped Schalke beat Wolfsburg 2-1, and Hertha Berlin overpowered newly promoted Nuremberg 3-1 at the closer of the 18th round in Bundesliga on Sunday.

Schalke grabbed a fairy tale start on home soil as William brought down Alessandro Schoepf inside the box allowing Daniel Caligiuri to mark the opener from the penalty spot with just 8 minutes played.

The "Wolves" responded well and equalized the scores in the 20th minute when Elvis Rexbecaj capitalized on Admir Mehmedi's square pass from very close range.

After the restart, Schalke had the chance to grab the lead once again but Mark Uth failed to beat Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels by header in the 50th minute.

The "Royal Blues" maintained the offensive play and secured all three points in the 78th minute as Daniel Caligirui made the most out of Weston McKennie's build up work with a well-placed hammer.

With the result, Wolfsburg slipped to the 6th place of the standings whereas Schalke climb to the 12th position.

Elsewhere, Hertha Berlin started with a victory into the second half of the season after beating bottom side Nuremberg on a second-half brace from Ondrej Duda.

Berlin took the reins from the start and pressed the hosts into defense. Hence, it took the visitors only 15 minutes to break the deadlock as Davie Selke's through ball allowed Vedad Ibisevic to open the scoring.

Nuremberg punished the visitors before the break when Hanno Behrens tapped home a rebound to restore parity in the 42nd minute.

After the break, Berlin assumed control again and retook the lead as Ondrej Duda slotted home from central position in the 50th minute.

The Slovakia international remained in the thick of things as he wrapped up his brace in the 70th minute.

With the win, Hertha Berlin moved to the 7th place. Newly promoted Nuremberg stay at bottom.
