RAMALLAH, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian prisoners' representatives and Israeli prisons service agreed on Thursday evening to defuse tension which last for three days in the Israeli Ofer prison in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Prisoners Corporation in Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) said in a press statement that the agreement was reached following a session of negotiations between the prisoners' representatives and the Israeli administration of Ofer prison.

"The prisoners obliged the prison's administration to retreat from imposing a series of punitive measures against the prisoners," said the corporation.

The prisoners required the treatment of the wounded prisoners and to normalize the situation as it was before January 20, including taking a break outside the prison's rooms and refraining from any escalation measures.

On Monday, the Palestinian Prisoners Club Association announced that at least 100 prisoners were injured during clashes that broke out between them and the Israeli guards of Ofer prison.

The association, a Palestinian non-government organization, said that six prisoners suffered bones breaking, 40 were injured in their heads and the rest were injured by rubber bullets and tear gas.

Israeli Radio reported that the prisoners carried out riots in the prison and burned fire into one of the cells after the prison's administration punished 12 prisoners for smuggling 12 cellular phones in the prison.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned what he termed as "the serious Israeli escalation against the prisoners" and held the Israeli government fully responsible for their safety.

Israel detains 1,200 Palestinian prisoners in Ofer prison, including 100 children, out of about 6,000 prisoners in total imprisoned in Israeli jails, prisons and detentions, according to official figures.
