NEW DELHI, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tremors Saturday shook Indian capital New Delhi and Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, the earthquake occurred at 5:34 p.m. local time.

"The epicentre of earthquake was Hindukush region in Afghanistan, located at 36.5 degrees north latitude and 70.7 degrees east longitude," information released by Indian Meteorological Department said. "The depth of the earthquake was 212 km."

According to officials and locals, the mild tremors were felt in Delhi.

"Earthquake of 6.1 magnitude in the Hindu Kush region. Tremors felt in Delhi too. No damage reported so far," a statement issued by Humanitarian Aid International, a New Delhi based aid organisation said.

In Srinagar city and other major towns of Indian-controlled Kashmir, the tremors forced people to rush out of buildings and houses.

"We were staying inside our house and suddenly I felt the ground beneath me shaking," Intizar Ahmad, a Srinagar resident told Xinhua. "In panic all of us rushed outside."

So far there were no reports of damage due to earthquake either in Indian-controlled Kashmir or Delhi.
