MEXICO CITY, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's position before the UN Security Council regarding Venezuela will be the same as the one it pushes via the Montevideo Mechanism, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Thursday.

Mexico's position and the Montevideo Mechanism "are based on the search for a peaceful and democratic solution, but it's up to the Venezuelans and excludes the use of force," he said during a press conference.

"Whatever is compatible with this position, we'll support it," the foreign minister added.

The Montevideo Mechanism is a four-step plan proposed on Feb. 6 by Uruguay and Mexico advocating a negotiated solution to the current Venezuelan political standoff.

The UN Security Council on Thursday failed to adopt two competing draft resolutions on Venezuela, sponsored by the United States and Russia respectively.

Also on Thursday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reiterated Mexico's position of non-intervention in Venezuela's internal affairs.

Venezuela has been plunged into a political crisis since Jan. 23 when National Assembly President Juan Guaido declared himself "interim president" and was recognized by the United States and some other countries.
