CAIRO, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi discussed Thursday in Cairo the latest developments in Libya with Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.

In a statement, the presidency said that Haftar briefed Sisi on the latest developments and efforts done by the LNA to fight terrorism and radical militias and achieve stability and security in the country.

Haftar also discussed Libyan efforts to combat the trafficking of arms and the movement of foreign fighters into Libya from abroad.

For his part, Sisi stressed Egypt's support for the LNA's efforts to fight terrorism in all its forms as well its role in working towards reaching political solutions to the conflict in the country.

Director of Egypt's General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel attended the meeting.

Since April, eastern-based Libyan forces led by Haftar have been advancing in a push to seize the capital, Tripoli, but troops loyal to Prime Minister Fayez Al-Serraj's internationally recognized government have so far kept them at bay.

Since the ouster and killing of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libyan factions have been engaged in a civil war that escalated in 2014, resulting in splitting power between two rival governments in the northwestern city of Tripoli and the northeastern city of Tobruk respectively.
