CHANGCHUN, May 23 (Xinhua) -- A black bear cub has been rescued after it got lost at the Changbai Mountain nature reserve in northeast China's Jilin Province, the administration of the nature reserve said Thursday.

Staff with a protection station of the nature reserve found the lost bear cub in the grass on Sunday when he was patrolling.

"It looked very weak after not eating for several days," said Li Shengwen, deputy director of the station.

To ensure the bear was indeed lost and that no other bears were around, the patrollers observed it from a distance for a long time, Li said.

Preventing the cub from starvation or attack by other wild animals, staff from the protection station sent it to the wild animal rescue station at the reserve for treatment.

Yu Zhehao, a staff with the wild animal rescue station, said the bear cub was starving. After a thorough physical check, it was found to be a female cub no more than 100 days old with a weight of nearly two kg.

The bear cub had severe intestinal problems. The veterinarian treated it and prepared appropriate food for the cub.

After days of good care, the bear cub has recovered, Yu said.

The cub will be set free when it has the ability to survive in the wild, said Yu.

Measuring 150 cm to 170 cm long with black glossy fur, black bears are listed as a national second-class protected species in China. They mainly inhabit mountainous forests and are commonly found in the Korean pine forests and oak forests in the Changbai Mountains.

The Changbai Mountains boast rich biodiversity and are home to endangered wildlife species, including Siberian tigers, boars and black bears.
