QINGDAO, China, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Video Assistant Referee (VAR) not only helps referees but also brings fairness to football, said Hany Al-Raeesi, deputy chairperson of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Referees Committee on Tuesday.

"VAR is a success everywhere in my opinion, as it is helping the referees to make the decisions," Al-Raeesi said at an AFC Referees Committee meeting in Qingdao.

"It adds value to football, and it adds fairness to football, not only to the teams but also to people who really enjoy watching football," he added.

"But we are always enforcing that the referee is the one to make the final decision. VAR is only an extra tool to help the referees," noted the Qatari official.

According to Al-Raeesi, VAR will be introduced at the 2020 AFC U23 Championship, which will be held in Thailand in January.

"It will be the first AFC tournament to fully use VAR, from match one to the final," he said.

World football's governing body FIFA introduced VAR in last year's World Cup in Russia and this year's Women's World Cup in France.
