BUCHAREST, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Romanian voters went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new president out of 14 candidates.

Polling stations across the country opened at 7:00 a.m. local time (0500 GMT), and is scheduled to close at 9:00 p.m. (1900 GMT). Overseas voting started on Friday for an unprecedented three-day voting session in the history of the country's presidential elections.

Over 18 million voters are expected to cast their ballots, according to the Permanent Electoral Authority.

A total of 18,748 polling stations were set up nationwide, while for the Romanian citizens abroad, 835 polling stations were prepared, up from less than 300 in the previous presidential elections in 2014.

Fourteen candidates registered in the race for the country's top job, including two female candidates, one of whom being Viorica Dancila, former prime minister and the leader of the Social Democratic Party.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, who is running for a second term on behalf of the ruling center-right Liberal National Party, is the clear favorite in the elections.

There is little chance for a candidate to win outright, local analysts said.

Romania's president is elected every five years, with two successive terms allowed.
